Look out for the Loons! The Rapids play host today, to
expansion side Minnesota United FC, you know one of those goofy teams with
United and FC in the name. The Loons, as
they are called by their supporters and fans alike, have lowered the bar as far
as expectations go for a team that is new to the league. Not by losing their first two games, but by
being the first team in MLS history to allow 5 or more goals in two consecutive
games.
We learned quickly last year that we can’t expect our
beloved burgundy boys to do what other teams have done against poor defenses. Let’s
not spend time reflecting what happened at NYCFC last year, or that tie that
should have been a win against OCFC, or every game against the Whitecaps.
In Brian’s interview with Kevin Doyle, Doyle mentions that
the organization of the team is what makes the Rapids dangerous. He also stated that even if it’s a 1-0 win,
it’s still three points. So now we know
where Kevin Doyle stands on that ongoing Voice of C38 debate.
One other thing that can be taken from that article is that
the Rapids are trying to add more freedom and creativity to what was working last
year. Unfortunately for Eric Miller,
(who will be today’s tailgate interview), a bad bounce can cost the team a
point or three.
Facing a side like MNUFC, who is clearly struggling with
their back line and keeper situation, could be just what the doctor
ordered. It could prove to be a great
time for the burgundy boys to try out the new tactics. The whole team could
gain some confidence in the fact that they too can score an abundance of goals.
Today’s game might be a good time for Coach Pablo to alter
some positions as well. Badji has got
speed, some would say he’s better up top and Doyle is a better #10. Shkelzen Gashi should be good to go, as well
as Tim Howard, so we should have everyone on the pitch that deserves to
be.
There will have to be some changes in the back though; sadly
with the hamstring surgery that Axel Sjoberg had this week means he will be out
until about July. Also, as mentioned
earlier, Eric Miller will be at the tailgate which means he won’t be on the
pitch. Options in the back are include new signing
Mike De Fonte or homegrown DU product Kortne Ford. It’s most likely that
Monument man Bobby Burling is next man up. Mekeil Williams could return to outside back
as well.
The Rapids do have some favorable luck against expansion
teams, as they are 9-2-2 when meeting newbies for the first time. Losing to Houston in 2006, and San Jose in
2008, all others have been lossless. The
regular season home unbeaten streak is also on the line, holding steady at 19.
We can be confident that the burgundy boys want to make it 20.
Predicted starting XI: Howard, Williams, Burling, Watts,
Burch. Azira, Cronin, Gashi, Doyle,
Hairston, Badji.
